Here's the problem. American animation
and comic book art ain't what it used to be, dudes. But then again,
is it not what it used to be? Or is it just being judged by an
impossibly detail oriented standard of stiffer foreign competition? Never in the history of art have so many young, children and teenage
artists who aspire to be professionals abandoned their native style
and instead became more highly focused on Japanese Idealism. And fail at reaching that Japanese Aesthetic Standard the vast majority of the time, which isn't surprising considering how intense the Japanese Market is. But you're not Japanese. You're a westerner, and you never will draw like the Japanese.
There's nothing wrong with Japanese
Idealism in and of itself. But there is when it causes America to
DE-VALUE Traditional Western art in Comics and Animation. As an
American, you will never be able to compete with the Japanese level
of detail. If you want to simplify or stylize your artwork, you
deserve to not feel the least bit guilty about that, because the
United States ISN'T JAPAN. It's a competitor of theirs, meaning we
don't need approval from fans or followers or practitioners of the
Japanese Pop standard to do anything. As a matter of fact, we're
better off ignoring it,which is how America got to such a high level
of Industry in the first place. By focusing on the Here and Now. Not
the Then and There. Draw what's in your heart, not what weeaboo otaku
tell you you should do to “increase the aesthetic standard”. Yeah
right.
