I'm not necessarily a fan of online dating. Too me that feels too unnatural and risky. It's a little rushed, and you don't necessarily know what your getting.
But that is not to say I won't date girls I meet online. If she's 20+ and is interested in what I have to say and like me in that way, I'd certainly consider being in a relationship with her, to say the least. I see nothing wrong with browsing pictures of my romantic partner online.
Honestly, I'd like to get to know a girl on deeper terms. I want to know more about her than just "is she interested in a romantic relationship with me". Relationships with message boards, social media, IM, email, and photosharing (on her part mostly). And then, maybe. MAYBE. If the communication in the relationship is working: Real world hookups later on, like visits, meetups, and smart phone calls.
Relationships on dating sites are a little too forward for me. I honestly like to develop organic romantic relationships with my girlfriends.
